Frequently
asked questions

For us, the future is already here: we constantly invest in advanced technologies in line with Industry 4.0 principles, integrating automation, digitalisation and the interconnection of production processes.

Stamping

The minimum cost-effective batch size for blanking depends on the characteristics of the item (such as shape, material and complexity) and the customer’s specific requirements, such as the quantities required, delivery times and available budget.

Overall, blanking is especially cost-effective for medium to large-scale production runs, as it requires the creation of dedicated dies, the cost of which is more easily recouped with larger batches. To assess cost-effectiveness and determine the most suitable minimum batch size, we analyse each request on a case-by-case basis, offering customised solutions.

Yes, we can also make the die. We always carefully assess the customer’s requirements and, based on their specific technical and production needs, propose the most advantageous solution in terms of quality, timing and costs.

Yes, we also work with pre-galvanised and pre-coated materials. We have experience in processing these materials, which require special care to preserve their surface finishes during the blanking or bending stages. We use specific tools and techniques to ensure that the material’s aesthetic and functional properties are maintained, thereby offering an optimal solution for applications requiring a ready-to-use final finish.

During production, the operator performs specific sample controls: for every set number of components, one is selected to check its dimensional and functional characteristics. The controls are performed using gauges, inspection templates and other suitable tools, in accordance with the technical specifications of the component. There is ongoing cooperation with our technical department, which supports production in interpreting tolerances and defining the most effective control methods. This approach enables us to guarantee consistent quality and compliance with customer requirements.

Punching

Punching is a sheet metal process that uses presses and punches to create holes, indentations or specific shapes directly in the sheet metal, without removing any material. It is ideal for producing fast and repetitive runs of components with precise perforations.

Punching is suitable for various types of metal, including steel, aluminium and light alloys. The choice of metal depends on the thickness and the mechanical properties required for the final product.

Punching offers advantages in terms of speed and cost for the mass production of components with repetitive perforations and shapes. It is particularly efficient on medium thicknesses and allows standard shapes to be produced without the need for complex cuts.

CNC punching uses computerised numerical control machines to precisely programme the position and sequence of the punches. This ensures high precision, repeatability, and the ability to process complex shapes in an automated way.

The maximum sheet metal thickness that can be processed with punching depends on the machine’s power and the type of material, but in our case we can punch sheet metal up to a maximum thickness of 3 mm, ensuring precision and quality in line with the project specifications.

Panel bending

Sheet metal panel bending is a high-precision automated bending process that uses CNC (computer numerical control) machines called panel benders. This technology enables complex, three-dimensional bends on all sides of the workpiece without the need for repositioning or additional tooling.

It is particularly suited for medium to large production runs, where high aesthetic standards, repeatability, and fast cycle times are required. The sheet metal is formed through controlled movements, achieving geometries that are difficult to obtain with traditional bending methods.

The main difference between traditional bending and panel bending lies in the level of automation and the complexity of the achievable geometries:

• In traditional bending, sheet metal is processed using press brakes, often requiring multiple steps and an operator for each bend.
• In panel bending, the entire process is automated. CNC panel benders bend the sheet metal on multiple sides with a single setup, without the need for external supports or frequent tool changes.

Panel bending is ideal for repetitive, precise, and complex production runs, while traditional bending is better suited for small batches or less complex geometries.

IMT processes various sheet metal types, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and other light metals. Thanks to our advanced equipment, we can handle materials in various sizes and thicknesses, ensuring precision and quality in every project.

Yes, IMT offers a dedicated service for sheet metal prototyping, ideal for testing new products or solutions before moving into mass production. Our technical team supports the customer at every stage, from design to manufacturing, ensuring precision and quality in line with the required specifications.

If you have an idea or a project to develop, you can send us a request to assess technical feasibility and receive a personalised quote. We are ready to support you in the production of one-off parts or small batch runs.

In addition to panel bending, IMT provides laser cutting, bending, welding, and powder coating services, delivering a complete, ready-to-use product.

Laser cutting

IMT uses Salvagnini machines for laser cutting a variety of metallic materials, such as stainless steel and aluminium, ensuring high precision and high-quality finishes.

Thanks to the capacities of our Salvagnini systems, we can process sheet metal up to 1500x3000 mm, adapting to a wide range of production requirements.

The maximum thickness varies depending on the material and the machine used: generally up to 2 metres.

Salvagnini machines guarantee extremely precise cuts, clean edges without burrs, high processing speeds and reduced waste, thereby optimising time and costs.

Yes, we accept CAD files in standard formats such as DXF and DWG to carry out custom cuts according to the customer’s specifications.

Bending

The main techniques include manual bending, bending using press brakes, roll bending and bending using CNC panel benders. Each method is chosen based on the type of sheet metal, thickness, bending radius and required precision.

Sheet metal can be bent by means of roll bending, manual bending or using press brakes. The method depends on the thickness of the material and the desired bending radius. Specific machines such as panel benders are used for precise and complex bends.

The bend is calculated based on the length of the workpiece, the thickness of the sheet metal and the bending radius. It is important to consider the so-called “developed length” which accounts for deformation during bending to ensure precise dimensions in the final product.

The minimum radius depends on the material and the thickness of the sheet metal. Generally, the minimum radius for thin steels can be equal to the thickness of the sheet metal, whilst for thicker or less ductile materials, larger radii are used to prevent breakage or cracks.

The minimum bend length is determined by the machine’s capacity and the type of bend. Generally, a minimum length is set to allow the material to bend without unwanted deformation, usually around a few centimetres depending on the machinery used.

Welding

It allows different metal components to be joined into a single piece, ensuring strength and durability.

At IMT, we mainly weld steel, stainless steel, aluminium and galvanised sheet metal.

Every process is monitored and checked, with in-house controls aimed at ensuring precision and reliability.

Coating

Powder coating is suitable for many types of sheet metal, including steel, aluminium and galvanised iron. For optimal results, we always carry out thorough surface preparation. Our technical team assesses each case to ensure the most suitable solution.

The coating thickness typically ranges from 50 to 120 microns, depending on the customer’s specific requirements and the final application, ensuring protection and durability.

Yes, with our Euroimpianti system, we are able to powder coat large-size sheet metal and components, up to 600 x 800 x 2000 mm. The system ensures even powder application and a consistent, high-quality finish, ideal for use in industrial and mechanical applications, as well as in other technical or manufacturing sectors.

We offer a wide range of standard and customised RAL colours, as well as matt, gloss, satin, embossed and metallic finishes, to meet every aesthetic and technical requirement.

Yes, powder coating ensures excellent resistance to rain, sunlight, humidity and chemicals, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications.
